About Our Legionella Test Kit (Rapid 25 minute test) 100 CFU / L
Legionella test kit - sensitivity 100 CFU/ L (Hydrosense One Ultra)
Simple and easy to use Legionella test for onsite testing. No need to transport samples.
Detects Legionella pneumophila sg1 antigen - this species is responsible for over 90% of Legionnaires' disease cases.

How to test for Legionella using the rapid test kit
Legionella water testing steps are shown below. Full instructions are also included with the testing kit.
Step 1 : Collect water sample.
Collect 250 ml water using the included beaker.
Step 2 : Draw sample into syringe.
Draw the sample up into the 60ml syringe to the 50 - 60ml mark.
Step 3 : Attach filter to syringe.
The sample will then be passed through the hollow fibre filter. Tighten the end cap of the filter before use. Attach the filter to the end of the syringe
Step 4 : Squeeze the liquid from the syringe into the filter.
Squeeze the liquid from the syringe through into the filter. Hold the filter over a container / sink while doing this so it catches the water. Repeat this until the 250ml has all been filtered.
Step 5 : Move filter cap to the bottom.
Remove the cap from the top of the filter, screw it onto the bottom of the filter.
Step 6 : Attach 0.25ml recovery buffer syringe to filter.
Next use the syringe containing 0.25ml of recovery buffer to extract bacteria from the filter. Remove the red cap on the 1ml syringe and keeping the filter upright, attach the syringe to the top of the filter then invert the filter, keeping it vertical with the syringe on the bottom and filter on the top.
Step 7 : Extract the concentrated sample from the filter.
This step extracts the concentrated sample from the filter. Pull the syringe back to the 0.5ml mark then push the liquid buffer into the filter then pull back to 0.5ml again and then push in and repeat 3 times.
Step 8 : Collect 0.1ml of the sample.
Draw the syringe back to the 0.5ml mark, push the syringe in slowly until you reach the 0.1ml mark. If this creates an air bubble, try again by pulling the syringe back and pushing it out.
Step 9 : Remove the Legionella test strip from its packaging.
Take the test strip out of its packaging. Only do this at this stage and not before.
Step 10 : Remove the filter and add the test sample to the Legionella test strip.
Place the test on a flat surface. Detach the syringe from the filter by twisting from the filter then add the 0.1ml sample to the sample port on the test.
Step 11 : Wait 25 minutes then read the result.
Start a timer for 25 minutes. Read the Legionella test after 25 minutes. Two lines = Legionella detected.

Do I need to do a lab test? |

Studies show that in lab culture tests, recovery rates are not very high (approx 64%) which means that false negative results using the lab culture method can happen in up to 35 out of 100 tests. Lab culture testing is also a lengthly procedure compared to the rapid results that are achieved with this test. However, some regulators require that a lab test is conducted, in this case, you should always do so. You can use both methods as this test will alert you quickly as to whether you have a Legionella problem while you are still waiting for lab culture results giving you more peace of mind. Many users will use a rapid test for early notification of an infected sample alongside lab culture or PCR testing. |

This depends on the water source you are testing. For example, HSE state "It depends on the system that you have and the outcome of your risk assessment. For open systems, such as cooling towers, evaporative condensers and spa pools etc, routine testing should be carried out at least quarterly. However, there may be circumstances where more frequent sampling may be required". Always check local regulations in regards to requirements for Legionella testing. |
