About Our aqueous tunnel washer dipslides (spray wash systems)

Our Aqueous Tunnel Washer dipslides feature Nutrient Agar (culture medium) with TTC (red spot dye) for aerobic bacteria / microbe testing. Due to the TTC red spot dye, most colonies show up as red spots making them easy to count / evaluate. Nutrient agar will detect / show growth for a wide range of microorganisms. This slide tests for total bacteria count on both sides.

If your test sample contains microbiological contamination, colonies / red spots will grow on the dipslide.

To use the dipslide, dip the slide into your sample before placing in an incubator. After incubation, you can then count the colonies / spots and compare with the chart provided.
A step by step pictorial 'How to' guide can be found further down the page.

These dipslides come in a pack size of 10 slides per box. The slide has a flexible paddle and is within a shatterproof container.

Why do I need to test Aqueous tunnel washer systems for bacteria?

When using aqueous tunnel washer systems, there is a risk of exposure to harmful bacteria.Several factors can contribute to the risk of bacterial growth / buildup in spray wash systems. These include:

  • Recirculation of process waters
  • Increase in temperature of water
  • Intricate piping areas where bacteria can build up
  • Contaminants such as limescale and rust
  • Bacterial cross contamination from workers or equipment used

The HSE recommend a control regime in line with guidelines within 'The control of Legionella bacteria in water systems Approved Code of Practice and guidance' (L8). Dipslides can be an essential part of this control regime with the documentation referring to:

i. Considering microbiological sampling to establish and monitor levels of contamination.

Within HSE documentation 'Legionella in aqueous tunnel washers' http://www.hse.gov.uk/foi/internalops/sims/manuf/3_09_06.htm, the recommendation is that:

'Microbiological monitoring should be carried out to establish whether control measures are working effectively. Dipslide tests should be carried out to measure general bacteria level in the water and this will act as an indicator as to whether the system is under control. Initially, monitoring should be carried out at frequent intervals to establish a baseline. The frequency of monitoring can be reviewed once this baseline has been established......The results of the dipslide testing should also be recorded. The use of a graph or table will assist in showing trends and will enable the user to decide whether the control measures are adequate and how often monitoring needs to be carried out to be certain that the cleaning and dosing regime are suitable.'

Scroll down the page to our comparison chart for HSE guidance on appropriate levels of bacteria within testing samples.

Please note that it is also recommended that sampling for Legionella should be carried out at regular intervals (at least every six months).

How to use the AT2 dipslide

Simply remove the dipslide and immerse in (or press against) the sample for approx 10 seconds. Remove dipslide and allow to drain (if necessary) for a few seconds, then replace the slide back into the tube and incubate for a minimum of 24 hours (up to a maximum of 48 hours).

A comparison chart is included so you can easily compare your results.

Remove Nutrient TTC slide from tube

Step 1 : Remove slide

Carefully remove the sterile Aqueous Tunnel Washer dip slide from its tube ensuring that no contact is made with the agar (to avoid contamination).

Surface testing

Step 2 : If Surface Testing

For surface testing, press the Aqueous Tunnel Washer dipslide onto the surface. If needed, place a finger on the bottom of the slide (on the plastic, not the agar) to apply extra pressure.

Liquid Testing

Step 2 : If liquid testing

For liquid testing, immerse the Aqueous Tunnel Washer dipslide into the fluid for 10 seconds then remove and allow to drain for a few seconds.

Swab Testing

Step 2 : If swab testing

Apply a sample of the test substance to a sterile swab and gently apply to the agars.

Incubate the dipslide

Step 3 : Incubate Slide

Label the tube with the included stickers then place the slide into an incubator and allow to incubate.

compare dipslide results

Step 4 : Compare results

Count the amount of colonies that have grown on the slide and compare them to the comparison chart provided.

Aqueous Tunnel Washer Dipslide Features

Flexible paddle

Flexible Paddle

Each dipslide features a virtually unbreakable and flexible paddle allowing for even, full surface testing.

Easy run off design

Easy Run Off Design

Due to the design of the dipslide, fluids will drain off quickly during testing.

Recessed Handle

Recessed Handle

Each slide has a handle built into the lid that is recessed to help keep your fingers dry during testing.

Side Indicator

Side Indicator

One side of the slide will have a circle indicator so you know which side was used for testing which type of contaminant.

Dual sided paddle

Dual Sided

Each dipslide is dual sided to allow multiple contamination testing with one test.

Thick reliable Agar

Thick Reliable Agar

Each agar is thick (approx 4mm) and raised above the dipslide to allow for easy surface testing.
